When President Garfield died in office, Vice President Chester Arthur became the 21st President of the United States. President Arthur was a widower and delayed moving into the White House until it could be redecorated. He commissioned Louis Comfort Tiffany to do the redecorating. This is the first officially known commission for redecorating the White House on record. The most notable design in the 1881 work was an opalescent floor to ceiling glass screen.

Tiffany’s work with Tiffany stained glass windows and Tiffany style lighting were already famous in 1881 when the work on the White house was done. That same year Tiffany redesigned the interior of Mark Twains home in Hartfort Ct.   This work helped bring Tiffany stained glass windows and Tiffany style lighting into American main stream popularity. Tiffany lighting and Tiffany style lighting are as popular today as they were 130 years ago. Accenting Tiffany stained glass windows with complementing Tiffany table lamps, Tiffany hanging pendant lights, Tiffany floor lamps, and Tiffany accent lamps transform rooms into living works of art that enrich the lives of all that enjoy the experience.
